Dolphins, bottlenose dolphins especially, are spotted regularly in the clear blue waters surrounding Tioman. The reason is that the sea here offers countless sheltered rocky islands and reefs. These are ideal for large congregated schools of juvenile fish to mature in, before they've accumulated enough size to head out to open sea relatively safely.
Dolphins are a common sight around Tioman
To increase your chances of an encounter with a pod of dolphins, head over to one of these sheltered rock formations. These areas are frequented by dolphins on a regular basis, because they tend to be their favorite hunting grounds.
Bottlenose dolphins enjoying a bow surf
You'll be able to view the dolphins from your boat, because bottlenose dolphins aren't shy. In fact, they're quite inquisitive and playful. But if you want to see them from closer by, then grab a mask and fins and go for a snorkel near some rocky formations with plenty of bait fish around. You'll need to be a bit lucky, but nothing ventured nothing gained.
Tioman dolphins swimming together playfully
If you're really lucky, dolphins spot your boat as it's making its way around. Occasionally, dolphins feel particularly playful and use a boat's bow wave for what presumably is their equivalent of a surf session. Best get your camera ready, because it's a sight you don't want to miss.
